Professionally Goodlooking

When my superfab Sister-in-Law came to visit a couple weeks ago, we decided in advance to take full advantage of the beautician/photographer combo by getting all gorgeous and then having an urban photo shoot in downtown Seattle.

We were so looking forward to this day! I came prepared with a suitcase full of clothes and accessories so that my photos would have great variety. We started with makeovers at Nordstrom. Melissa, who usually goes for a very natural look, got super brave and went smokey/bold. It was perfect. Very edgy urban. I had to get a bit bossy with my Makeup Artist in order to get the look I was going for, but it turned out very well too. We did a little shopping, bought some new clothes, then started scouting for good locations to shoot.

The weather was perfect, the timing was ideal, everything was going just swimmingly. It was then that I realized I had LEFT MY ACCESSORIES BAG AT HOME! I dropped to my knees and screamed curses to the skies for about 6 seconds. Then I dusted myself off and forged ahead to make the most of it.

We began in Rainier Square. I was drawn to the fountain there, thinking it would be the perfect backdrop for our red umbrella prop. (Can't take pictures in Seattle without using an UMBRELLA.) One of the restaurants in the courtyard had these colorful umbrellas over the tables in their outside space that worked really well as a backdrop too. We dominated that courtyard and shamelessly whored ourselves for the camera until we were fully satisfied. People were slowing to watch us and tourists were snapping pictures, but it didn't phase me. It was tons of fun.

After that we relocated in search of a more retro urban look. I had a vision of the perfect, old brick wall. We found it on a remote side street in Pioneer Square. Some of the very best pictures of the day came from that street.

At this point I really needed a complete costume change. I wasn't about to waste the daylight by hunting for a bathroom. So Melissa held up my coat and I changed right there on the street. Some lucky guy drove by at exactly that time, and practically crashed his car as he stuck his head out his window to watch us, grinning like an idiot. I just smiled and waved. MEN.

The whole day was SERIOUSLY the most fun I've had in a WHILE. I'm going to start a fund so I can fly Melissa back again soon. Maybe for the next time I make a major hair change! In the mean time, I'm keeping my radar on for great locations for the next photo shoot. Know of any, fellow Seattlites? Share the knowledge!!!

Wow. As someone who appreciates well-executed photography, let me just say, your photo shoot is beautiful! Perhaps you missed your calling in life (*model*), but I'm sure your husband doesn't mind! ;)

I don't need to waste time telling you how much I love every photograph again...so I'll tell you that I've heard of a cool garden in downtown Seattle- kind of like a Buschart (sp?) Garden's but a smaller version. I'll ask my friend where it is and what its called...

Some people have more than their share of photogenic-ness! My suggestion for a photo shoot would be at the Center for Wooden Boats. While you're there, walk around behind and over to the back of the armory and that would be a good place too. Right next door to that is where the float planes take off. You get three different settings in one stop!

Great photo shoot! Looks like you two had a lot of fun.

Lots of parks in the area would make nice backdrops. Discovery Park, Lincoln Park, Seattle Center. Downtown over by Pioneer Square there's the Waterfall Garden Park. Of course you could also take the water taxi over to West Seattle, and then you'd have the downtown skyline in the background.

It's such a beautiful city in general, it's hard to narrow it down.

Love your latest posts, especially the photo shoot! My dad is photographer and he would love this idea! You look great.....I need to do something fun and free like this! I need a makeup makeover too.....Sarah Jackson's blog had some cute photos at a graffiti wall in Seattle. Check out her blog. I think Daina Crowell did the same thing?? Either way, the photos there were great. I LOVE your spontaneous, crazy, fun ways! Rub off on me will you?

Such great pictures! You gals looked great!

So, I want to do something drastic with my hair this fall. And it made me think of you, because you've changed your hair so many times. I want to go to a 4 or 5. Which would be pretty dark for me. Considering I'm a super light blond. But I'm really excited.

You are brave. And I think your hair always looks good!

De-lurking to comment...Great photos!
As for photo whoring spots: I only lived in Seattle for a short while, but I love heading over to the locks & fish ladders on Lake Washington. There are some awesome gardens just inside the gates there, the locks themselves have a cool industrial vibe, and on the far side (away from the parking lot, near the fish ladders), there are some truly cool sculptures of stylized waves. Also, check out the Japanese Gardens for more good photo ops.
