Party Favors. Yay or Nay?

My daughter graduates to the double digits this week. The big 10. Since 21 is the only major birthday that falls on an odd year, I throw the big themed party on even birthdays and a small family party on the odd years. As such, I now have the pleasure of planning a last minute-ish party for Shiney, and I'm breaking into hives just thinking about it.

Aside from the obvious stresses of putting together a big party for a bunch of squealy little tweeners, I have one small hang-up I'd like to put out to you. Every time my kids go to a birthday party, they come home with a little bag stuffed full of candy and obnoxious little toys. When did this become an obligation? My kids are coming to celebrate some one ELSE's big day. They're getting cake, ice cream, pizza, a dozen friends and a landslide of superfab games out of the day... WHY do parents feel the need to send them home with more than that? Have any of you parents ever been offended when your child came home from a party with nothing but a smile? Would I be breaking an unspoken code of educate by NOT providing the party favor bag? Your thoughts.

And in unrelated news, I was presented with this award yesterday! GO ME!!! My sister in law Melissa has bestowed upon me The Smile Award! She gave honorable mention to my bullet point posts about life with kids, so I've provided links to some such posts. Since I really have nothing to do with the humor involved there, I will humbly accept this award on my children's behalf.

As the rules go, I would like to pass this award along to 5 amazing bloggers that never fail to have me wheezing for breath on the floor.

First up would have to be Kelley from magneto bold too. I seriously bark out loud at this lady's brazen take on life with "Boo and The Damn Emos". She's the woman who says out loud everything that the rest of us are thinking. She even finds words to voice the things that we didn't know we were thinking.

Secondly, I MUST bow to Loralee of Loralee's Looney Tunes. She has a flare for story-telling and the kind of descriptive power that will bring even the stiffest person to side splitting tears.

Another of my favorite sites is undoubtedly These are a few of my Favorite Things, penned by the humble, yet fabulous, Christie. She walks us through her days with charm, grace, and unparallelled hilarity!

This list would be incomplete without the self proclaimed goofball, Charity of Hidden Treasures from an Oddball Mind. Not only is this woman my sister, but she's also a comic thespian! She combines ordinary words in ways no other human being is capable. And for those of you who are wondering, she talks EXACTLY like she writes! I promise you, you've never seen anything like it.

And last, but CERTAINLY NOT least, I'll have to boomerang this nod right back at Melissa of The Howell Herald. Melissa's kids give her humor ammo day in and day out. She verbally paints the most painfully hysterical pictures of what it's like to be a semi normal person who lives with crazy people.

So go check them out and have a giggle.

I hate party favor bags, but I totally feel guilty if I don't do something. I think someone should end this stupid ass trend though. Let's do it!

Congrats on the award.

Just don't go overboard with it. I know when my son was young it was a contest who could make the best bag.

I say boo to the bags- its just like any other holiday..the money making gods have found ways to make you spend lots more and then feel like a lame parent if you don't. As the devil's advocate, I say down with the party favor bags!!
Lovely award and so true too. When I have a few minutes, I am really looking forward to checking out those links!

We actually like the favor bags. My kids love to pick out little presents to say thank you to their friends for coming to enjoy their day. I find it is also a great way to teach kids so show appreciation for others time and gifts. Although I must admit, it does add another item on the to do list which can sometimes be stressful. :o)

Awwwww, thanks babe.

I am a mad party bagger. But only until they are like 11 or so. THEN the sleepover parties start and you WISH for the party favour bags days.

Hey thanks for sharing the blog love my way. Mucho appreciated.

I'm one that does the party favors, and kind of likes it. I'd say you have to do it. You don't have to do a ton of stuff, but the kidlets will be expecting it.

Think of it this way....include a mini thank you note and then you are done with the politeness patrol! I almost never do bags, for example on Lily's birthday we gave out little pink watering cans with the junk from a pinata inside.

don't worry about the party favors...if its' really important take a picture of each of the kids with the birthday girl and print out that picture for them to go home with. You can even use that picture as a thank you card. kids don't care about the bags and neither do the parents.

I hate the party favor thing too. I ususally try to do something that they can take home that's not the candy and toys that go in the garbage. For example this year I bought tubes for the pool for them to play with and then take home but I don't think this actually happened. Just to note when taking the girls home they were talking about how it was one of the best slumber parties ever, even without goodie bags!! One year they made necklaces out of beads, Grants friends made cars out of boxes ect... You get the idea.

Congrats on the award!

As far as the party favor bag, we never had those at my birthday parties. And if I were a parent, I wouldn't be offended if my child came home without one. What does one put in a party favor bag, anyways?

Hehe...I tuned in for the Sunday Soap Opera, too. Oh well--something to look forward to.

As for the gift bags, the cheap and junky toys always go straight into the trash--hopefully without my daughter finding out! I hate that stuff! I feel sort of bad for throwing it all out, but honestly, how many of us want junk cluttering up the house?

Well, My daughter just had her 9th birthday, with no party favors! We did attach a candy to the thank you note when we passed them out, late of course!
