Well, it's that time of year again. Time for me to make my obligatory color change. The dark has been delightful, but I am VERY ready to lighten up. In order to look like I belong among the living, I have to put on concealer, line my eyes, darken my brows and strategically apply a bronzer every single day. It always looks good in the end, but I'm ready for a more naturally flattering look. I called my usual person, who was going to charge me $125 an HOUR for the change that would certainly take a minimum of 8 hours from start to finish.
Weighing my options:
Get my hair done? Have Christmas.
Get my hair done? Have Christmas.
I opted for the cheaper, more difficult route of doing the color myself.

It was, however, logistically impossible for me to complete stage one without a competent set of hands. So I got a local stylist who was willing to use my color line and let me boss her around for the bleach and toning part of the transformation. She was very nice about it. It took about 4 hours and went exactly as I predicted, ending at a flat, brassy (but even) dark blonde. The perfect base color.

I would love to have gone straight home to add my high and low lights, but I had a date with Edward Cullen! So I took my brassy, unfinished head to the theater and
met up with my friends for the Twilight movie. I should have stayed home with my hair.

The next day I applied a toner to get rid of the brassiness. I started adding dimension by taking the underside a shade darker, slicing some lowlighting through the sides, and highlighting around my face. All this I did working upside down, backward and blind. Though I actually let Shiney apply the toner to the roots at the back of my head. It took her an hour to cover 4 square inches, but she was very precise and did exactly what I told her. I was very proud.
I still have more high and low lighting to do and am in desperate need of a good haircut. But overall I'm pleased with my change. It brings the golden tones out of my skin, as opposed to the pink I've been seeing with the dark hair. This is the result to date.

What do we think?

Love it!
I love it! Well done!
I think it looks great my friend.
You are the one person I know who can wear every hair color and every hairstyle and look fabulous.
love it! i hear you on the makeup and painted on eyebrows. :) reasons i'm returning to blonde.
Dude, did you just ask me to give you my opinion on your hair? A guy, you asked a guy to give you an opinion on your hair? Like asking your husband if you butt looks big in that dress?
Seriously ... I'm smarter than that.
Amazing ... it looks amazing.

You look fab!!!
Looks good, but could be darker, but not as dark as it was.
I LOVE it. Please tell me how you got BLACK out yourself? I MUST learn this secret.
When I saw you Sunday I was surprised you still wanted to tweak it because I thought it was the perfect blend of colors and really makes you look great. Plus, your hair is still so thick and shiny and healthy after all that processing, not fair! But you can hardly call me the color expert, I have resorted to dying my hair my natural color from a box and calling it good enough. So tweak away, can't wait to see the results!
maybe its just the picture up there and the way the colors worked out in the digital world but I liked the "brassy" look better! The end..well almost end one is nice too but not as cute as the other- to me. I love how this was a total family/friend/chick down at the local salon effort! Did Shiney like helping out?
THANKS everyone! Shiney felt like Queen for a day and made efforts at the kind of small talk she overhears in the salon. It was super CUTE.
The first color was actually OK, but in person it was awfully one dementional. It also had more red in it than I ultimately want.
I think this color needs to be darker too Mike! I've decided that will be my first order of tweak: major lowlights. I don't think I'll be adding more blonde.
Change is so fun!
It looks awesome! Is that your kid doing your hair? You are a braver woman than I!
And I hate when people come by and say something like, "Thanks for commenting on my blog" but I just had to come let you know that I started reading your comment, and was telling my kid that someone was calling me a dude (???), and by the end of your comment I was in hysterics! Running on drugs sounds like a fantastic time! Yes. Crack it is then!
You look beautiful, as usual. The pictures are wonderful. Happy Thanksgiving Melain.
XOXO,
CP
you are just a freaking babe whatever color!
But you look really great with the newness. How lucky are you to be such a chameleon. I have change envy.
You inspired me in one of your comments to write a post about relationships/romance from a man's perspective.
And I have a question. You chose a lighter color for your hair, will that be a problem as your hair starts to grow and the darker color comes out? Will you have to color again to get it to match?

Freaking LOVE IT! You Are Beautiful, My Dear!
Looks great. Is closer to the look you had when we first met you. But you do look great any way you want to go.
Oooo KNOT! I can't wait to read your man-take on romance. That'll be great!
And actually, this is almost identical to my natural color, so I won't have any grow out. I had to retouch the dark color every 3-4 weeks to keep the lightness away. I'm excited for the lower maintenance.
I think you changed it to get away from the Cullens look! ha ha- you know you are great looking with any hair color seriously! You are a master of color! Good job with the color job. sorry I was so far away and could not help you with applying new color. Happy to help any time!
fantastic! I can't wait to see the new style too but I love the color. you are able to wear any style and look fabulous.
The answer to your romance question is up, well the first post on it is. Expect about 4 posts.

I love it and feel certain that I would trust you with my hair. Will you move here and do that to me?
Your hair is absolutely gorgeous! You're someone I would trust to color my hair -- and I don't say that to just anyone. With a few bad colors behind me, I'm a little picky. ;)
