I went to a nice guy in a local salon. Aside from the fact that I asked for a trim and lost over 2 inches, I felt pretty good about it when I left. It was even from the front and the layers were swinging the way they were supposed to. I should have looked more closely.
Now granted, this is a hard haircut. It's not enough to make it even in the front. The length has to be perfectly symmetrical on both sides all the way around. And THIS cut? My left side was shorter and curved up, while the right side hung quite a bit longer and curved down. I can't believe I missed it! I can't believe I couldn't FEEL it!!! LOOK AT THAT!!!
How did this guy let me leave his chair?! Did he think I wouldn't notice? Or did he himself not notice?! When I pull up the sides you can see how drastically the length differs from one side to the other. Those pieces by my shoulders should be the same length. Yikes.
I just barely had time to sqeeze that haircut into my schedule as it was. I didn't have any time to go back! It looks like I'll be doing it myself. AGAIN. So I dragged my hat stand to the middle of the room, hung a small mirror on it so I could see the back, and fixed the stupid perimeter my dang self. Then I had to reshape all the layers on that side to match the new length. There's no haircut harder than one you have to do upside down and backwards on your own head!It actually looks really cute now. I get a lot of compliments on it. No thanks to Edward Scissorhands over there. Way to go dude.

I can't even remember the last time I got a haircut or color that I didn't have to come home and fix. I'm pretty much used to it by now. I don't know what I'd do if I didn't have the skills to make it right. The whole thing got me thinking. What do ordinary citizens do when they're given a bad haircut? Do you drop everything and go back to get it fixed? Are you scared to go back to the person who screwed it up? I know I wasn't too keen on going back, even if I'd HAD the time. Have any of you ever gotten a perfect haircut? Or do you just learn to deal with whatever you get. As a stylist, I'm very interested in some feedback on this.

My hair never turns out the way I hope. I think part of the problem is my inability to adequately communicate what I want, and I'm never brave enough to go back to my stylist to ask for something to be fixed.
I've tried to trim pieces myself afterwards...to make me feel better. Not sure if it made it look better or not, but it made me feel better trimming them off. Maybe that's why I do go a long time between cuts because I hate the drama involved with explaining what I want, hoping they understand what I'm getting at, and then trying to re-create the same look again!
BTW...the last photo ought to be submitted and used for potential gigs! :)
My problem is that I never know what I want, so I can't complain when I come home and don't like it. I'm too scared to try anything drastic. I am in need of a change though. I LOVE Nessa's. You did a great job.
I've had both. Bad haircuts and Great haircuts. When they suck, I make sure never to go back to the same place. When they rock, I'm pretty darn loyal.
How much do stylists actually listen to their clients? I mean, if you say, "Just a trim," and they think to themselves, "They need 2 inches cut off," how much weight do most stylists put on what the customer wants as opposed to what a stylist THINKS the customer needs?
I've had many a bad haircut. Once in high school, I had really long hair, and the girl cut one side slanted and the other side straight. It was RIDICULOUS! I had my friend fix it when I got home. Haircut before last, I went to a new girl because my regular had shoulder surgery. She did a fantastic job on the back, but she did a really bad job on the front (didn't wash my hair or part it down the middle, so if the wind blew and messed up my part, I had really long pieces on one side). I keep waiting to come up there again so you can DO ME RIGHT!
I just go to you. You've seen all of my bad haircuts. Most of them done by my husband. Oy. Cheapskate.
I blogged, and whined, and complained for WEEKS about the bad haircut I got last year. It's still growing out and I'm still traumatized. Please move here so you can cut my hair? PLEASEEEEE!
I only left a salon in tears once and it's cause I'm pretty sure bringing in a picture and saying, make my hair look like that, only works if you have the right texture and type of hair to pull off said style. My regular hair lady before you was fantastic, I just can't justify driving to Bellevue for my hair anymore. Thank the heavens you moved to BFE to help the rest of us in BFE.
Brit: Communication is big. Pictures help, but even then you run into problems.
Jill: Yes, that last picture is a framer for sure. Super hott. Or at least super me anyway.
Stacey: I actually do better with drastic. That way I don't have the previous cut to compare it to.
LT: Good to know there is such a thing as a rockin haircut. I feel like I've given some great ones, but never really having HAD a great one, I'm starting to wonder...
Knot: Stylists do tend to be a bit inch blind. Unless we're given a specific lenth to stick to, it's easy to get carried away.
Cheech & Melissa & Holly & Christie: Me me me. That's the ticket. :)
I still wish I'd never had you do my hair before because I can't get a good haircut now..I hate 'em all. Before you did my hair, I thought it was just that I had crappy hair. Now I know it really is the hair-cutter and NOT the hair. Did you call the guy and have a word with him??
There's a guy that all the ladies out here RAVE about, want me to pass his number on to you? He's based out of Seattle and tells the women that he will do their bangs for free if they will PLEASE not go to anyone but him- because he's always having to fix all the screwed up stuff that other hairstylists are doing. Im sure you've had to fix a few bad haircuts in your day!
I have the same problem with stylists not listening to me, I say one thing and they tune out all the rest, I try to have a picture but sometimes your hair type doesn't work for that cut, but the stylist won't say that. I love who I have now, its all about communication, she stops every now and then and tells me what shes doing and asks me if thats what I want. Its AWESOME! Love it!
I'm with all the commenters who just wait for you to do it (with my inept trims between times). You've got us all spoiled.
Just for the record, we all need to make it to the Celestial Kingdom so you can keep doing my hair. If I don't make it, though, will you still visit me?
Cheech, you must have me confused with someone who chooses the right...
I have to say your hair looks great.
Ok I am so bugged about my sons hair It is course and wavy and I always tell the people to leave some on top and then short in the back..no bowl cut but just so the hair doesn't stick up straight in the back. No kidding nobody has ever done it. I got so annoyed I borrowed a neighbors clippers and clipped the back and then used my embroidery sharp scissors to shape and blend the rest. It turned out great and just what I have been not getting for the past 5 years. He is 7.5. I mean how stupid and I even upgraded and went to a few real salons that cost more than the no appt places and they still couldn't. So From now on I will be cutting his hair.
My hair- I just live with it except once in awhile I slink back overly-apologetic and say I was not clear etc and get it fixed but that is sorta rare. I wish you were my hair person you seem like a miracle worker and well worth the chunk o change you must charge.
speaking of hair
ok I just bought an amika at the mall what do you think of those?
First off, your hair is fab. And yes, I have gotten a HORRIBLE hair cut more then once. My junior year in high school, I was a little punk rocker and I wanted my hair cut really short so I could spike it. I went in and asked for an inch all the way around my head. I got about 1/4 around the bottom and the top was about 1/2. I looked completely butch. My mother just about had a heart attack. Though I didn't like it I knew it would grow out. I did have a hair dresser back in Arizona that was just WONDERFUL (to the 10th power). I have gotten several perfect hair cuts from her. Oh Emily, why couldn't you move with me to Washington? My hair is thick and she would spend tons of time on it texturizing and what not. It was wonderful! She is the only stylist I have ever found that just gets me and my hair. I have lived here for a year and two months and have gotten my hair cut three times. I was so hesitant because I did not know who to go to. The first time was a disaster, but I was in Idaho and my cousin wanted to chop her hair off so I went with her. No one was open so we went to Walmart....YES I said I went to Walmart LOL. I don't think I need to explain anymore. The second time, I told him I wanted to grow my hair out and to just even it up since I had an A-line hair cut. So he proceeded to give me another A-line. He actually did a good job, but that was not what I asked for. The third time, the 'stylist' put a lot of weird layers in that seem to want to do whatever the crap they want to do. I never went back, because I don't like confrontation, and if they screwed it up the first time, then I don't want them touching my hair again. I usually just let it go, or go somewhere else to get it fixed. FRUSTRATING! When I moved here Julie Sarchet said that you were a stylist and I would love to go to you, but I knew you would be way busy. Anyway, I am glad that it turned out well for you!
Wow. I cannot imagine getting a cut like that, then having to straighten it out myself! Seriously! Kudos to you for being able to fix it yourself. I'd have to leave my hair like that because I'd butcher it even more!
Also, I think I want you to cut and style my hair. ... Is that weird?
Are you kidding EP? Not weird at all. As a hair stylist, I'd say that's generally the idea! :)
The last time I got a cut, the lady did an awful job, which I fixed as best I could when I got home and saw how uneven and poorly layered it was. I had to use embroidery scissors! (my sharpest ones) It looked decent once I had fixed it, but still not right. Grr. I am way too chicken to go back to a stylist, nor do I really have the inclination to - it's hard enough to get time to go! I am constantly in search of a magically perfect stylist. (Don't you want to come down and visit some time? :D)
i can't remember a haircut I have gotten in the last 4 years that I have liked... not to mention color or highlights... why can't I find a hair artist! I need a hair artist... not just someone who cuts hair ya know :(
